ABSTRACT:
In the evolving landscape of career aspirations, the dichotomy between pursuing a “dream job” and securing “dream pay” has become increasingly relevant for today’s youth. This study investigates the career priorities of young individuals in Nagpur, India, focusing on whether intrinsic motivation or financial incentives drive their employment decisions. Drawing on primary data collected from 109 respondents—including students, job-seekers, and working professionals—the research identifies key influencing factors such as passion, growth opportunities, salary, job security, and family advice. Findings reveal a marked preference for job satisfaction, with 65% of participants prioritizing a dream job over high pay, reflecting a generational shift toward purpose-driven careers. Social media platforms like LinkedIn and YouTube also play a moderate but notable role in shaping career aspirations, especially among respondents aged 18–23. Additionally, while company reputation is perceived as important, it is often secondary to factors such as learning opportunities and organizational culture. The study also notes mixed attitudes toward compromising job enjoyment for monetary gain, suggesting nuanced decision-making processes among the youth. Generational perspectives, changing economic conditions and the rise of flexible work environments further influence this paradigm shift. The research underscores the importance for employers, educators, and policymakers to recognize the evolving priorities of young professionals, emphasizing purpose, balance, and personal growth over traditional metrics of success. By highlighting the complex interplay of internal and external motivators, this study contributes to a more holistic understanding of youth career choices in contemporary India.
